Autumn is one of the most rewarding times to explore the wine country around Venice. Vineyards change colour, while wineries move from picking into fermentation and cellar work.
Timing matters, though. Veneto does not have one single harvest date. In 2026, the Veneto Region reported that the regional harvest started at least 8-10 days earlier than usual after an unusually warm and dry growing season. In Conegliano Valdobbiadene, the local Consorzio later confirmed a harvest running about ten days ahead of the historical average.
So if you are visiting Venice in September or October, the useful question is not simply “Is the harvest still happening?” but rather: which wine region near Venice offers the most interesting experience at the time of your trip?
Quick Facts
• Best window for active harvest: September is generally the safer period, but timing varies by grape, area and vintage.
• What October feels like: less about grape picking in many areas, more about fermentation, cellar work and autumn landscape.
• Closest unusual wine experience: Mazzorbo in the Venetian Lagoon.
• Classic full-day wine trip: the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Hills.
• Best autumn focus for red-wine lovers: Valpolicella and the appassimento process used for Amarone.
When Is Grape Harvest Season in Veneto?
There is no single answer for the whole region. Harvest timing changes with the grape variety, vineyard location, altitude and weather in a given year. The Veneto Region’s 2026 harvest guidance itself distinguishes between different appellations and production rules rather than treating the region as one uniform harvest calendar.
If your priority is to see active grape picking, September is generally the more likely window across the areas covered in this guide. By October, many producers have moved into the next stages of winemaking. That does not make October “too late” for wine travel: it simply changes the experience, with fermentation, cellar work and autumn foliage becoming a bigger part of the visit.
Valpolicella is the clearest example. The Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella explains that grapes selected for Amarone rest in ventilated drying rooms, or fruttai, for around 100-120 days before winter vinification. In other words, one of the region’s most distinctive autumn processes begins after the grapes have left the vineyard.
Best Wine Regions to Visit Near Venice in Autumn
The best choice depends on how much time you have and what you want from the day: an unusual local wine without leaving the lagoon, iconic vineyard scenery, quiet countryside or a deeper cellar experience.
Venetian Lagoon: Wine Without Really Leaving Venice
One of the most unusual options stays within the lagoon. On Mazzorbo, just beyond Burano, Venissa grows Dorona, a native grape of the Venetian Lagoon, inside a historic walled vineyard and offers guided vineyard walks followed by tastings.
Mazzorbo is served by ACTV Line 12 from Fondamente Nove, so it can be reached without organising a road transfer. Always check the current timetable before travelling.
This is particularly suitable if you want a wine experience that still feels unmistakably Venetian, or if you only have a few hours rather than a full day.

Prosecco Hills: The Classic Wine Day Trip from Venice
For a full day in wine country, the Conegliano Valdobbiadene hills are one of the most recognisable choices. The UNESCO World Heritage landscape is defined by steep ridges, vineyards, forests, villages and the grassy terraces known as ciglioni. UNESCO also highlights the continued role of manual vineyard management on the steepest slopes.
The wine to know here is Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, produced primarily from Glera.
If you would rather enjoy the region without coordinating transport and winery appointments yourself, explore our Prosecco Wine Road day tour from Venice, a full-day experience designed around the Prosecco landscape and local wine tastings.
Euganean Hills: A Quieter Wine-Country Escape
South of Padua, the Euganean Hills offer a very different atmosphere. The Regional Park describes their volcanic origins, while today the landscape combines vineyards, olive groves, historic villages and thermal towns.
The local wine consortium protects two denominations: Colli Euganei DOC and Colli Euganei Fior d’Arancio DOCG. Wines worth knowing include Serprino, Fior d’Arancio in dry, sparkling and passito styles, and red wines based on Bordeaux varieties that have long been cultivated in the area.
Autumn works especially well here because wine can be combined with places such as Arquà Petrarca and the wider landscape of the regional park. For more background before you go, read our guide to the Euganean Hills south of Venice.
If you prefer to experience the area rather than plan it independently, the Euganean Hills day trip from Venice turns the countryside, local wine and some of the area’s historic highlights into a complete day out.

Valpolicella: Autumn Reds and the Season of Appassimento
Valpolicella requires a longer journey from Venice, but autumn gives the region a reason of its own to make the trip. The Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella identifies Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella among the indigenous varieties that define wines such as Valpolicella, Valpolicella Ripasso, Amarone della Valpolicella and Recioto della Valpolicella.
The defining autumn process is appassimento. After harvest, selected grapes rest in well-ventilated fruttai for roughly three months; the Consorzio describes around 100-120 days for Amarone before winter vinification.
That makes October particularly interesting even when picking has finished. If you want to build a full day around red wines and cellar traditions, Discover the Valpolicella Wine Region is the most natural Venice Incoming experience to continue with.
Which Wine Region Near Venice Should You Choose?
Start with the experience you want rather than the label on the bottle:
- Mazzorbo / Venetian Lagoon - best if you want the closest and most unusual wine experience without leaving the lagoon.
- Prosecco Hills - best for iconic vineyard scenery, sparkling wine and a classic full-day excursion from Venice.
- Euganean Hills - best for quieter countryside, volcanic landscapes and a less obvious wine destination.
- Valpolicella - best for structured red wines, appassimento and a deeper autumn cellar experience.

Wine Tasting in Venice or a Winery Day Trip?
You do not have to leave the city to include wine in your Venice itinerary. The real difference is depth versus convenience.
If you only have an hour or two, our Wine Tasting in Venice keeps the experience in the city and focuses on a guided selection of wines and grape varieties from Italy and the Mediterranean, without adding travel time to your day.
A winery day trip is different: you see the vineyard, landscape and cellar together. During autumn, the setting also gives context to what happens after harvest, from fermentation to the appassimento process in Valpolicella.
If wine is one of the main reasons for your trip, choose the countryside. If it is one experience within a packed Venice stay, an in-city tasting may make more sense.
Half Day or Full Day? Planning a Wine Experience from Venice
- A few hours: stay in Venice or head to the lagoon. Mazzorbo works well when you want something distinctive without committing an entire day.
- Half a day: possible for the closest areas, but travel between stations and individual wineries needs to be planned carefully.
- A full day: the more realistic choice for the Prosecco Hills, Euganean Hills or Valpolicella, especially if you want more than one tasting or a guided visit.
Harvest and early cellar work can affect visit availability, so booking ahead is advisable. If seeing active harvest activity is essential to you, confirm what will actually be happening on your travel date before booking around it.
